today is just a q+a in front of a small audience, and then some good old fashioned book signing…the q and a was interesting, albeit short, as we dove into some topics that are near and dear to my everyday experience…the 2 that I recall 9clearly) are my relationship(s) to the culture and my relationship to the divine…here my karma pops up again and again and can be seen fairly clearly in these 2 broad ranging subjects…everyone was really nice at the place, and the signing went well…we got thru quicker than we planned, so after an organic type food encounter, we caught an earlier flight, getting to denver about 7 or 8 pm…it’s always weird when you are in 3 cities in one day, or 6 in 24 hours if you wanna be technical…but I am having fun…
We had arranged to be picked up in denver by a nice lad who works for my friend/philosopher/renaissance man ken wilber…ken runs the integral naked site that I had previously posted my thoughts and incomplete recollections of the temple recording sessions that some fans had attended back in april? Sometime around there…integral naked (the site) is ken’s baby to try to bring together “leading edge” type thinkers/artists/scientists/mystics and the like…i highly, highly recommend any of ken’s books if you want to get a larger perspective on yourself and our world…so anyway, we got a chance to go over to ken’s place in denver and hang out…somehow someone got the idea that I was a vegan (I’m not) so we ate a bunch of food I did not recognize…we shot the breeze, listened to some tracks off my new record, and had a great time…off to bed…
I got up early to see some friends of mine who live in denver, and had to be back at the hotel around 1 to meet some other friends of mine who also live in the area…it’s always good to see some old friends, familiar faces…soundcheck, book signing! when we got to the soundcheck, there was no one there because they must have assumed we were going to be late (we weren’t)…it was not the right kinda of place for yungchen and I to be playing anyway UGH!!…this was further confirmed the minute Igot in the door and saw the flyer for my show where they had used a picture from the adore album that is about 6 years old UGH!!!…not that I look that different from then, but they chose not to use the picture we had sent that is current, can’t say I know why…this is what you call in the fake entertainment business a “BAD SIGN”… oh yeah, when we got to the book signing, we went upstairs in this massive place…i had only been signing for about 5 minutes when the fire alarm went off! at first, we didn’t know what to do so I kept signing…(“he signed his books in flames”)…after a minute of the wa-wa-wa-wa the MAN said we had to get out, that it was a real alarm…now here is the amazing part…all the fans went out of the store SINGLE FILE, everyone respecting everyones place in line…after we got an all clear, everyone went back in, again keeping their places and we started up where we left off…the staff of the store told me they were amazed at how well the crowd dealt with the situation, and no one took the opportunity to make off with my book for free…no surprise to me, of course… 🙂 my cold/flu had now reached the point of full on no voice, so I had them make a sign that simply said:
I HAVE LARYNGITIS
I AM SORRY I CANNOT TALK
I LOVE YOU
Whenever someone would ask me a question, I would just point to the sign…a
couple of times people said really nice things, so I just pointed to the “I love you part”… Back to the show at Jake”s Crack Den…my laryngitis had now set in so bad
that I could barely talk at all, which meant no singing at all…i was bummed as it threw off the show we had planned…plus, I could barely read the poems…needless to say the show was pretty out of control as best a poetry/spoken word show could be, as the fans threatened to take over the whole show…it was a memorable night for a lot of reasons: people shouting, people begging, people crying….my favourite comment of the night was, well, it’s actually hard to choose…one guy kept shouting “make a movie!” over and over, and another guy kept shouting “you did a good job with breaking benjamin” in a new york accent over and over…thanks men, I will make a movie (someday) and I did do a good job on breakin Ben because their record just went gold…congrats to the boys, you deserve it!!! check out their rage if you haven’t had the chance…. 🙂 Anyway, dear denver, you always leave a mark… God bless you, that’s all I got to say…off to (suspense building), oh no, not again, gotta love that border crossing…..????
Vancouver BC CAH NAH DAH…
Vancouver really is a beautiful city…i can see why people come and never leave….actually, we got into the country fairly easy this time around, and it was another round of (aren’t you tired of this story yet?) soundcheck and book signing…by the time we got thru customs blah blah we were already late for the signing…so I just walked in the front door and went right to the table, grabbed a sharpie or two, and started scribbling…again, everyone was great great great…thanks vancouver for always being so kind…the show was down in the wharf area, and the place had a nice vibe to it (I think it’s normally a theatre for plays)…the only hang was some horrible car crash set from Ikea that made Yungchen and I look like we were playing on an infomercial…again, I had terrible laryngitis and couldn’t talk too well…much less sing 🙁 (for the best, perhaps?) But with the experience of the same limitations as the night before, the show ran smoother, and I was a little less apt to let the inmates run the asylum…out the door and straight to bed…up early, back to the airport, back thru US customs, off to SEATTLE (home of de grunge) for our last show…until next time
