Toronto always shows me a good time, and a warm embrace, even as I shake my head over all that is CA-NA-DAAAA…it’s nice to see everyone revved up for the hockey season….jfk Anyway, I digress…tonight we are set to play at a church…it’s a simple church, as far as churches go, but I am happy to be here…i am not sure about playing up where the priest normally stands, but that’s show biz…i tried to keep it clean if you know what I mean (I only cursed once, a record low) but wasn’t so sure about people up there on their cell phones, but that gets into all sorts of subjects: brain cancer, eternal damnation, proper rostrum etiquette…i was very excited when I realized that they had a real deal pipe organ in the place, and had the darn thing fired up and going before I was told “nope, can’t use it, the head priest man a’int having it”, so that was the end of that…it was as close to jon lord/deep people land as I have ever come…i think for my day in Toronto, I did something like 7
interviews, all of which were very nice/well intentioned and respectful…go Canada!!! your education system works…intelligent discourse from a well-read populace… I appreciate signs of life, if you know what I mean there (all who read between lines please now do so)…anyway, anyway, everything was groovy/cool/fine, did a beautiful and spiritual show with Jesus and Mary over my shoulder, so it was all good…we were going to do an encore, where I wanted to read psalm 35 for exclamations sake (obvious of course to the venue at hand, I know) but the sound guy hit the music and somebody hit the lights and that was the end of the show…one small footnote on all that is the big R word “religion”…as I am going around, various Jesus peoples are trying to box me in, minister me, point things out, slip me sheets of paper with cryptic stuff on ‘em i.e.. They are trying to TELL ME WHAT TO DO… I appreciate the love and all, but I am on spiritually sound ground…for anyone who cares to listen, I am on the same ground I have been on all along (read: since 1967)…. I may have been a bit occluded, but I have not changed so much as an admittance to the obvious and the other aspect of which is my willingness to speak about it in PUBLIC…a kid said to me the other day, “like, I heard you found God and stuff, is that true??” uh, no, I didn’t find God…you cannot find something if it has never been lost…ok, maybe, in that thinking, God found me? It is not important, I am Billy, spirit made flesh, word made whole, insanity made mainstream, love made lover…life is good!!! Jesus people, please save someone who needs saving, there are many who are in greater need than I… I will never be a puppet for man’s vision of the whole deal…anyway, anyway, anyway, the show was beautiful, the crowd was lovely, and the sound was perfect…Yungchen sang in the most exquisite way, and all was wonderful for a moment or two…off to Cleveland!!!!!!!!!!!
It was all going so well, you see, until we tried to get back INTO the United States…with the election coming up, it seems that security is tighter for obvious reasons…Yungchen, having fled Tibet for India, now has an Australian citizenship…last I checked we weren’t at war with the aussies, but for Yungchen, getting back into America with all the rules at hand is not always easy (visas, papers, letters)….anyway, we almost missed our flight, but got there in the nick of time, and flew down to O-Hio on some sort of antiquated duck prop deal, where the 3 of us all passed out like ducks…once there, we hopped in a rental car and hit the tar…(basic plot narrative stuff/sorry, bores me too!)…went to hotel, went for radio station interview, went to book signing early, ate some salad, signed a ton of books (thanks Cleveland!)…then drove out somewhere far to the theatre where we were playing…we were late, so we hurried in and did a quick
soundcheck with some older type people who looked like they had never seen a 37 year old dashingly handsome man of letters and a far east siren with 4 1/2 feet of hair…got it together, did our thing ifyouknowwhatimsayin and got ready for the show…the highlight of this day was finding out that my book had made the New York Times bestseller list!!!!! O-M-G!…for some reason I assumed that poetry would be considered non-fiction, but I guess I can see the rationale for putting it in with the fiction books (cause its all lies)… I AM/was totally blown away by this, and I have to say THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart to all the fans who have supported me in this endeavor…you have truly touched me with your support (you really are the best, go on, you know it)….so I went on on a good cloud and we had a fun show up on this stark, barren theatre stage…a nice night..so far, so good with the shows (this would be called foreshadowing 🙂 Went home, thought of indians and vizuels…
Next morning, we gots up and droves to ANN ARBOR…didn’t the Stooges used to play here, man?? All we have today is a book signing…we held out forever for breakfast, looking for the ever elusive Bob Evans…have you ever seen bob Evans?? He used to do his own commercials, or was it Jimmy Dean…ah, the sausage kings!! found Bob about 29 miles outside of A A and chowed down…mmm-mmm-good…we went on in to the city, and it was as if 5,000 MU students were there with open arms, waiting for us!!…there was a parade and everything!!!…uh, hmm, actually not, there was nothing, no fanfare, only the dull throb of education at its finest… Whenever I come to ann arbor I am reminded of how Michigan tried to recruit me at age 17 to come to the school for political science (flew me up and everything)…funny if I had taken them up on their offer 🙂 We had a bunch of time to kill, so like homeless eyes we wandered, feeling kinda creepy crawly…went into the super “we are better than you record store” which had a fantastic selection but absolutely no friendliness, so we skeedawdlled and just killed some time (chicken soup anyone?) which is my least favourite thing in the world to do, to do…at some point we even went and sat in the rental car and watched many of your comings and goings…(an interesting lot>>>) The signing was incredible, I couldn’t believe how many people came…i can’t say enough how grateful I am…it has been an incredible trip…
+We hopped in the car after talking to some kidz and drove far away/away to our hotel: at the AIRPORT in Detroit…it-does-not-get-any-more-glamorous-than-this!!! There is something about staying at the airport that just brings it all home, or better yet makes me want to go-home (I really miss home when I travel)…it is hard being this close, it makes me think lonely thoughts as I lay my head on my synthetic imitation-down pillow…next stop, Minneapolis….
