we head on up to boston…as we drove on over to harvard square, I realized that the red sox were playing, and it was cold and rainy, so I started to figure not many people were going to come to the signing…we were met by a wonderful young woman (we’ll call her Samantha, to protect her wholesome identity) who was our guide to all things HAR-VERD…unfortunately, we didn’t have any time to take the tour and look at a school they never would have let me into anyway, so we went for steak instead (a symbolic choice for me, as I have usually chosen food over higher learning EVERYTIME…) with all things sweet, I pondered my fate, worrying maybe we had overshot too far coming up here, with the generation gap at hand and all these smart people with something better to do than get a poetry book signed…so when we walked up in the drizzle to the store, I was shocked by the tremendous line snaking down the street…i honestly couldn’t believe how many people were there!!…i am forever humbled by these not so random displays of support…so we trundled in, ms. samantha going on about all things young, and me going on about all things old, and sold out the entire store of my book…towards the end of the signing, fans were coming up saying “sorry I couldn’t get a book cause they sold out, so I just wanted to shake your hand”…fans started leaving the store to run to other stores to find a copy of the book but it was sold out at the other stores as well…incredible! the game was rained out, but people were telling me that meeting me was more important to them than the game…what a great night!!! everyone was wonderful and warm and shivering, but it was truly an honor to be there…afterwards, we were set to drive back to nyc, so to unwind we went for a quick bite, said our goodbyes, and proceeded to drive into the remnants of some lost hurricane…i should have just stayed and hung out with the boys and girls in khaki, but like intrepid travelers we instead went off into the dark deep and 5+ hours later (of course we got lost!! even with a navigation system) I crawled into bed…a strange, wonderful, fated day…thanks again
The 16th was full of press and promo and interviews and interrogations…the 16th was also the opening for Yelena’s show for her paintings, of which 3 of that series are in and on my book…the show is up for 5 more weeks if you would like to see her paintings in person…the gallery is called Dactyl, located in Manhattan…. Click here for info on the gallery and to see her work…the opening was a big success, although I found the entire evening stressful for lots of reasons…lets just say that I need to heal my heart and grow up…enough said… 🙁
Washington!!! over the years I have enjoyed tremendous support and love from good ‘ol D, so I was looking forward to coming…this trip was no different, as the signing and entire visit was great…every store we are visiting is telling us how impressed they are by how many fans show up…”more people came for you than this famous person, and this other famous person blah blah”…all I know is that I am signing books until my hand is falling off…”and he never played guitar again…” after the signing, Yungchen and I performed at the infamous and eternal 9:30 club, the current building a place the Pumpkins helped christen somewhere along the way, way back when…because we had to squeeze in our show before another show, there was very little time for soundcheck, practice, and some time to rest before the show…we weren’t really that prepared to play I must admit, so we decided to make it all up as we went along…after the first few songs and poems, I
literally just flipped to poems with no forethought, and found ones that felt right…it all turned out great actually, the best moment of the night being when fans came up and read their favourite poems of mine, and one nice young lady read one of hers…another girl came up out of the audience and asked to sing a song, and she was good!! this is the way it should be…it was really a warm and wonderful show…thanks to everyone that came…i really appreciate you…
But the true the highlight of the trip is that we got an invitation to have breakfast at the White House…it’s a much different place, of course, than pre-911, with all the additional and necessary extra-security…but I didn’t mind, as our visit was pretty cool, and I had my usual breakfast of pancakes, eggs over easy, and sausage (I love food)…i got to meet some wonderful people on this trip from all walks of life, and i am really thankful for all that you teach me…God definitely works in mysterious ways…
