Q: Why have you decided to write your life story…why now?
A: the basic premise behind any autobiography is the notion that there is enough of a story to tell, but that is not why i am writing about my life so far…in fact, i feel that i have not lived long enough to put the life i have lived in proper context, or that much of what i am talking about is ultimately important to anyone but me…this is a public art project that intersects a few goals: freedom from the past, freedom for the future, and a desire to share without shame…
Q: Many people who have had your success write books, obviously, because there are many, many fans who are interested in how you got there. But why over the internet? Shouldn’t you be putting it in a book that you could sell instead? It seems an awful lot of effort for free.
A: at first look, it is a lot of work for what seems like nothing…but i strongly believe in my relationship with my fans…i trust them to see the big picture, to follow me where i must go…if it is not something they are interested in, then i hope they will just change the channel, or in this case, don’t read along with what i am writing…just because i am putting it on the internet today for free doesn’t mean i can never out it into book form…i may or may not do that someday, but as of today, i have no clue…however, i do know that if i was writing about the things that have happened in my life for publication in a “real’ book, it would be a much, much different tale…the freedom that the internet affords allows me to go into any area, relationship, or event without reservation, to hold nothing back, to go as deeply as i “need’ to go…and then, before i have to much time to think about what i have just written, let it go like a child’s balloon…and then it is out there, somewhere, and then i can’t get it back…and then i sit down and write another chapter…
Q: But don’t you feel really vulnerable letting the whole world peer behind the “wizard’s curtain,” so to speak? I understand how your fans may be sympathetic to the events and decisions in your life, but aren’t you just giving the naysayers more grist for the mill?
A: i feel extremely vulnerable telling anyone about what was really going on in my life, behind the scenes all those years that i had previously spent a tremendous amount of energy avoiding and hiding from…in the story, i am extremely critical of many of the key players in my life, but the most blunt assesments are reserved for myself for, at times, not having the courage to stay on a path of truth and love…and also for tolerating or looking the other way during what i now percieve to be gross abuses of power…as far as the rest of it goes, i believe in the addage ‘the truth will set you free”…i feel that everyone has the right to tell their story, as they saw it, and no one has the right to tell them they cannot…just look at the person telling the story, look at what they have done, see what they have accomplished, and consider the source…because everybody has an agenda…
Q: So what is your agenda then?
A: my agenda is to promote positive change, loving compassion, a tough love, celebrate the spirit, and uncover who i really am…
Q: That sounds fine and good, I think that most of us believe in those ideas as ideals to live by, both in the world around us and in our own lives…but how does writing critically about your life, the life of Billy Corgan, achieve that?
A: because in order to understand where we are going, we have to understand where we have come from, and how we got here…i know where i want to take my life in the future, and soon, hopefully, so will you…if you know how this story ends, it will make a lot more sense why it must be told…but it requires patience, like all great dramas do…
